A "status quo" decree from 1757 has led to the shared administration of this and other sites in Jerusalem. See the ladder over the door, at the right? For over 250 years, officials can't agree on who or how to remove it. In 1964, Pope Paul IV ordered that it remain in place until the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches reach a state of ecumenism.
