Rabbit

Rabbit

Venturing onto Road F in search of dainty sprouts. Holding still for a distant portrait. Is this a brush rabbit (Sylvilagus bachmani) or a blacktailed jackrabbit (Lepus californica) [actually a hare]? I have often seen the former feeding nearby in the mornings, at the edge of the chaparral. The latter might prefer the more-open grassland, as here. This animal disappeared quickly as I approached, and I didn't get a good fix on its legs or tail. 6:08 am.
