Japjit Tulsi, a fellow Acterra board member, offered an airplane ride at the live auction during Acterra's Party for the Planet. I won. I invited Philippe Cohen, past ED of Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve and an enthusiast, to come along. I took many photos -- duh! Wow, the airplane moves fast, no time to carefully compose the image...

There are three collections. The Peninsula collection has many images of Jasper Ridge from the air -- and also Portola Valley Ranch, SLAC, Stanford, and Palo Alto. Windy Hill and Felt Lake appear often.

We made the coastal collection with the ambition of documenting Cotoni Coast Ridge for Sempervirens Fund. As we flew down, the fog was lifting. What a beautiful coast!

Finally, of course there are images of the Baylands in the vicinity of the Palo Alto Airport. Unfortunately, we were unable to get close to Bair Island -- too many restrictions on the air space in the glide path for SFO.

It is very interesting to view a familiar place from an unfamiliar perspective. Did you know that THAT was so close to THAT? Why does it take so long to get from one to another, and why does my mind put them in separate geographical categories? (Of course, my mental map is shaped by ease of access and the location of roads and trails -- not by straight-line proximity.)

Enjoy!
