Sea Lion Dream

Sea Lion Dream

A California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) swims through kelp at Point Lobos, north of Big Sur, on 7/2/2007. Sea lions seem to have a nice life: feasting on fish, then relaxing on the rocks. But we don't usually see the killer whales and great white sharks that feed on them. (And Wikipedia reports on the stress to the pups in January and February 2015, due to unusual weather: unprecedented warm surface water, a failed El Niño, fewer anchovies, sardines, and mackerel.) Point Lobos was named after these sea lions. When the Spaniards occupied the area and established Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, they named this area Punta de los Lobos Marinos, or Point of the Sea Wolves, due to the barking of the sea lions. Spanish "wolf", English "lion" -- a predator, in any case.
