San Francisquito Creek

San Francisquito Creek

San Francisqito Creek flows gently through the woodland at a time of low water. Leaves of warm colors cling to the trees and float in the still water. Toward the end of February, Coastal Range newts (Taricha torosa torosa) come from far and wide to mate in the quiet waters here. The young newts eventually return up the hills to repopulate the Preserve. See <CaptureTheLight.zenfolio.com /Newts>. Location: Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve is located off Sand Hill Road above Palo Alto, California. It is owned and managed by Stanford University. Its mission is to contribute to the understanding of the Earth's natural systems through research, education, and protection of the Preserve's resources. See <jrbp.stanford.edu>. This image was taken near the end of Trail 2 where it crosses the creek, at midmorning on an autumn day, August 14, 2010. Photographer: Dan Quinn enjoys capturing and sharing images showing aspects of the natural world at a special moment. A resident of Portola Valley Ranch since 1977, he is on the board of Acterra, and active with Hidden Villa and with Sempervirens Fund, POST, CGF and other conservation groups.
