1/12/2017: I just heard that President Obama declared these 5,800 acres to be a national monument! Here are some images from when I visited the property in early 2015 -- including the one used by the Sempervirens Fund to announce this news. CONGRATULATIONS to the Sempervirens Fund, Steve Reed, Mike Kahn, and everyone who worked on this!
The proposed Santa Cruz Redwoods National Monument (Now the Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument) is the former Coast Dairies property, near Davenport, CA along Highway 1. It extends from north of Molino Creek to Laguna Creek, and encompasses dairy land, riparian lands along multiple creeks, chaparral, oak forests, and second-growth redwood forests. It borders more preserved land inland: San Vicente Redwoods, the former CEMEX property. See <SantaCruzRedwoods.org>. Sempervirens Fund has all the details: <Sempervirens.org>.
I visited the land several times, along different trails. I also attended the campaign kickoff event in Santa Cruz on 2/12/2015.
Aerial views are nearby, in my collection from 3/20/2015. Thanks, Derek Hine!
BONUS: Sempervirens Fund hosts a visit to the trails under construction, 7/18/2024, We still await the full opening of this new National Monument.
