Traversing grassland sloping to the fog-crowned Pacific, we enter the welcome shade of an ancient redwood forest, recovering from a wildfire a quarter-century ago. A six-foot Garter Snake shares the trail; grazing cattle observe us; Turkey Vulture and hawks soar overhead; and bees nestle in Golden Yarrow, not yet fully awake. Nice hike, nice company, good to hear of the good work of Sempervirens Fund and the rangers of the National Monument.
