Frozen Coastal Range Newt (Taricha torosa torosa)
This newt held still in this frozen position, left leg raised, for over 10 minutes. The only movement I saw was below the chin, in and out with the breath. I was busy, moving in and out and up above, changing angles, focusing carefully. After 10 minutes, the newt lowered its leg slowly, in two seconds, still suspended above the ground. Then it held this new pose for another five minutes, until I had had enough, wanted to photograph the kiting kite and then change lenses. It then walked a bit -- but seemed happy to freeze again, for five minutes, for my macro images with the drop in the foreground. (You can see the time at which each image was captured. Click the info tab.) Other newts I met this morning were not so cooperative, and moved sooner. All images here are of the first, freezing, newt, except the last one with the earthworm.
