Madrone Tree. A beautiful old tree next to the trail. The Madrone is known at Hidden Villa as the "Refrigerator Tree". Some morning, feel the smooth red bark -- especially on a young tree. The cool sap is close to the bark, and the smooth bark provides good heat conductivity away from your warm hand. The Wolken Education Center at HV uses local Madrone wood in the conference area to good effect. (This was salvaged from downed trees, not harvested from healthy trees, of course.) Madrones are currently declining throughout their range; Hidden Villa Wilderness provides an important refuge. Madrone Midview #4995.
