An early morning expedition from Mapache Gate, through several ecosystems, almost to Searsville Lake. Highlights include goldfinch and chickadees feasting on oak blossoms and seeds in a valley oak bursting with new growth, on Trail 10; springtime flowers, new leaves, and shoots; and new land in the process of colonization, from a flooded Corte Madera Creek.
Spring wildflowers include dirca, Fremont's star lily, man-root, gooseberry, ceanothus, Indian warrior, hound's tongue, blue witch, and the aforementioned valley oak. Fresh new leaves from valley oak, buckeye, dirca, and poison oak. Buckeye seeds and shoots. And honeybees and native bees, winter ants, bee-flies, a newt, a fresh mole tunnel, and some mysterious scat.
