A male Northern Harrier wheels around a treetop. Looking closely at my photos later, I see another bird perched there – a female? (This is my guess, based on what I know of the world in general – no specific knowledge of Northern Harrier behavior.) Drawn to this spectacle by the sharp eyes of Grassroots Ecology Interns, I take a series of photos, then stop to rejoin the group. An interesting story emerges later: the smaller male approaches the female, then flies back up. The female moves from the shelter of the Valley Oak foliage, up to the top of a bare snag. The male approaches again. Could I have waited to see the dénouement?
