A male Northern Harrier wheels around a treetop. Looking closely at my photos later, I see another bird perched there – a female? (This is my guess, based on what I know of the world in general – no specific knowledge of Northern Harrier behavior.) Drawn to this spectacle by the sharp eyes of Grassroots Ecology Interns, I take a series of photos, then stop to rejoin the group. An interesting story emerges later. Could I have persisted until the end?
Near Escobar Gate, Harvester Ants scurry across dusty soil. Setting Sun casts sharp shadows. There are aerial views of camels crossing sand dunes; here is a mini version.

A Common Ringlet poses on prickly oak leaves – long enough for Starlingfish to add to iNaturalist, then for me to play with different foci, raw material for a “focus stack”. A caterpillar munches on Hayfields Tarweed – one focus is enough. Five bucks take their leave as we appear over the ridgetop. A rare evening hike from Escobar Gate.
