Insect Horde on Tarweed

Insect Horde on Tarweed

Larger Beetle and swarm of smaller insects on the open flower. Ants and others on the hair-covered sticky stems. Six purple sepals guard unopened blossom. This Hayfields Tarweed (Hemizonia congesta ssp. luzufolia) marks where Mader Valley Trail leaves Longspur in Portola Valley Ranch. 8/12/2025, 9:01 am. Focus stack. (The sticky hairs on stems and leaves are called "trichomes". I suppose they carry the sticky tar, which itself helps prevent transpiration and evaporation of precious water. Leave a comment if you know!)
