Here’s what happened this month in our Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) – with a focus on the former. Far from the internet, on the edge of “civilization”, life goes on. Great Blue Heron stalks the Frog Pond. Lesser Goldfinch poses and scarfs seeds. In a clearing at the forest’s margin, California Quail and Brush Rabbit share breakfast. Native Ground Squirrels peer cautiously from their extensive underground retreat. Insect horde swarms Hayfields Tarweed. Naturalized “Wild” Turkeys are at home in the Frog Pond. A new generation of Western Bluebirds learns about the water dish on our deck. Deck, garden, Frog Pond, and trailside – the natural world interpenetrates our civilized lives.

August 2025 in Portola Valley Ranch and nearby: nature is still here, in our 50th anniversary year.
