After overnight rain, sunlight greets birders at Escobar Gate. Raindrops sparkle on spring flowers: Lowland Shooting Star and California Poppy in the hollow, Fremont’s Star Lily and Warriors’ Plume in the oak woodlands. A spider thinks she is hidden behind the blossom of a Star Lily. Her protruding legs give her away; her image in a raindrop betrays her entirely. Deer browse green leaves and graze green grass in the morning sunlight. A Western Bluebird investigates a hollow in an old snag of an oak.

Ominous clouds approach, finally conjuring a rainbow with the help of remaining sunlight. The first cloud passes, succeeded by a more potent version. Soft steady rain bathes a patient Mourning Dove.

As rains clear, we walk a golden road back toward a lone Valley Oak, and to home. A good day of birding, botanizing, and seeing.
