Standing Treetrunk

Standing Treetrunk

This oak has stopped living. Perhaps it is a Coast Live Oak, perhaps succombing to Sudden Oak Death. The trunk and branches remain, providing a passage for the Poison Oak vines to reach higher and harvest more sunlight. (Rodolfo Dirzo points out that Poison Oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum) is one of the few plants that can flourish in different forms: as a vine and as a bush.) Here its diverse leaves show green -- still photosynthesizing -- and autumn red -- given up for the year, waiting for the next rain. Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, Road G. 7/17/2022, 11:06 am.
