After the soaking rain brings a definitive end to the dry season, fresh grass pushes out of the moist soil. On this monthly birding transect, my attention is drawn to old friends, classic (to me) oaks of the ridge area: five Valley Oaks plus the welcoming canopy of Blue Oaks at Escobar Gate.

In this season of renewal, ripe Buckeye seeds are ready to drop into the waiting soil. A young newt seeks shelter. Mushrooms pop up.

The birders do see and hear many birds, but the birds stay cryptic, not flirting with me and my camera to produce an image worthy of sharing.
