Sudden Sunlight on Serpentine Seep and Leather Oak Woodland

Sudden Sunlight on Serpentine Seep and Leather Oak Woodland

Exposed serpentine rock sits above the top of the serpentine seep. Leather Oaks (Quercus durata durata) crowd the serpentine soil beyond. A green Coast Live Oak (Q. agrifolia var. agrifolia) leans in from the left, growing on more fertile soil. Below, my shadow anchors the photo. Grey skies predominate, but allow an open sliver for sunlight to burst through, briefly. Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, beyond the end of the Irene Brown Trail (Trail b). 8/21/2021, 8:38 am.
