Fat Solomon (Maianthemum racemosum) on Arroyo Trail
Was known as False Solomon's Seal, I don't know why. 4/13/2020, 8:46 am. iPhone photo.
Flash: I now know why, thanks to Ruth Buneman and Helen Sharsmith. Ruth writes:
"'False Solomon's Seal - Smilacina The common name indicates a likeness with the true Solomon's Seal of the Atlantic Coast whose six-pointed flowers resemble the mystic symbol of two intertwined triangles known as Solomon's seal. Smilacina(scraper) refers to the stems being rough-hairy in some species. The rootstocks and young leafy shoots were eaten by Indians. Berries red, tasty but cathartic.'
"Quoted from Spring Wildflowers of the San Francisco Bay Region by Helen K. Sharsmith, 1965. A valuable book that I bought for myself many years ago. The price printed on it; $2,25! A valuable resource from University of California Press.
"Thanks as always for your slideshows with splendid photography. I loved the close-ups of Iris.
