Three Oak Species, Mistletoe, and Toyon
In the foreground on the left: a valley oak (Quercus lobata), festooned with mistletoe, sheltering a toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) at its base. The toyon shows reddish-brown leaves; most of its red berries have been harvested by robins, cedar waxwings, or other birds. On the hill in the background: on the left, with no leaves, deciduous blue oaks (Q. douglasii); on the right, still with their dark green leaves, coast live oaks (Q. agrifolia), the most common oak species at Jasper Ridge. A favorite vista of mine. Birding Transect Trail, 9:32 am.
