Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) with Two Other Oaks and Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia)
This is a favorite vista of mine. A valley oak stands at the edge of the serpentine grasslands; a few clumps of brown mistletoe contrast with its new green leaves. Serpentine rocks, drying grass, white flowers, and even a California poppy decorate the grasslands. Beneath the oak grows a Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), now bereft of its red berries and hence inconspicuous. On the ridge beyond, blue oaks (Q. douglasii) gradually merge into coast live oaks (Q. agrifolia var. agrifolia) on the right. The Bay lies beyond, overshadowed with a little haze.
