The dry region, with prominent serpentine rocks and poppies, was where Paul Ehrlich and company carried out their famous study of bay checkerspot butterflies. Although these butterflies can no longer be found at Jasper Ridge, their host plant, Calfornia plantain, still grows among the European grasses next to Road F here.
