Giant Trillium (T. chloropetalum)

Giant Trillium (T. chloropetalum)

Three deep-red petals; three cozy two-faced sepals, three multicolored bracts, which many people just call "leaves". Three times three, trillium. An underground rhizome, full of nutrients, preserves the plant during the dry times, when nothing is seen above ground -- and in case of wildfire. A spectacular flower of early spring. Black Oak Trail below Blue Oak Trail, Portola Valley. 2/3/2022, 7:53 am. iPhone photo.
