Experiment & Reward

Experiment & Reward

Noa Pinter-Wollman is running an experiment with Harvester Ants (Messor andrei) in the grasslands at Jasper Ridge. The basic question is, do different ant nests/colonies have different personalities (shy, inquisitive, ...)? Not individual ants -- colonies, sharing the nest with a queen. Her latest protocol includes placing familiar and unfamiliar objects on an ant trail near the nest, and measuring the reaction of the colony. Here is a piece of apple. The ants from this nest are glad to see it. A little reward for being such good experimental subjects.
