Upper Old Spanish Trail begins at the trail junction near the Grandmother Oak, and leads past Arroyo Trail along the ridge and up into Blue Oaks, the Lake, and Los Trancos Woods. Only a small portion is in the Coal Mine Ridge Nature Preserve of Portola Valley Ranch. Just past the Grandmother Tree is an open meadow sometimes called Ridge Rest. Arroyo Trail takes off just beyond Ridge Rest.
