Puerto Montt, Chile, is a seafaring town north of Patagonia. It has a strong German tradition beginning with settlers in 1852. The Spaniards tried hard, for a century or more, to settle these lands, to build up some terrestrial presence to help fight the British pirates hiding in these waters.
