Birders with Oak Vista
The group of birders passes an old valley oak (Quercus lobata), partnered with a toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia). The green leaves of the toyon let it blend into the scenery, at the base of the oak. On the far hill, blue oaks (Q. douglasii) give way to coast live oaks (Q. agrifolia var. agrifolia) as you move up the hill to the right. The birding transect trail goes through serpentine soil here, grasslands at the edge of the forest. Some serpentine rocks decorate the slope below the trail. 9:33 am. I include this image with the flowers, both because a few white blossoms (yarrow?) can be seen at the edge of the grassland, and to give location context to the other images.
