The village of Panabaj, on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, was devastated by a mudslide caused by Hurricane Stan in 1995. Survivors moved to two new towns, Chukmuk I and Chukmuk II, along Lake Atitlan past Santiago Atitlan. In 2008, Rogelia Cruz led a group of artists and residents in a project to create a set of murals in Chukmuk Dos. The huipil and skirt of an old woman shows the Map of our Past, scenes from old Panabnaj. A man's embroidered pants shows some Mayan Traditions -- including Christmas as well as the Day of the Dead. Another mural documents the Hurricane Stan Disaster at Panabaj in 2005 and the cleanup. Finally, the headpiece of a young woman holds Our Dreams for the Future.
