D. Mule Ears (Wyethia ssp.)

  • Two species: Narrow-leaved and Smooth. Both native to CA; smooth is endemic.
  • Ask iNaturalist – or research. Get iNaturalist on your phone! Fun!!
  • Like a sunflower, each flower head contains many of what botanists call “flowers”, each with its own pollen and ovary, anther and pistil. Look!
  • Found mostly sunny places. Grassland or open meadows.
  • Tough taproot.
  • One is in grassy meadow near the vernal pond on Coal Mine Ridge, Coalmine Trail.
  • Another Crab Spider! Didn’t I tell you they can change color?
