Two species: Narrow-leaved and Smooth. Both native to CA; smooth is endemic.

Like a sunflower, each flower head contains many of what botanists call “flowers”, each with its own pollen and ovary, anther and pistil. Look!
Found mostly sunny places. Grassland or open meadows.
Tough taproot.
One is in grassy meadow near the vernal pond on Coal Mine Ridge, Coalmine Trail.
Another Crab Spider! Didn’t I tell you they can change color?
