A kite hovers stationless in the firmament, beating its wings to remain motionless, watching for a sign of a moving vole in the grasslands below. Sue, I am glad you got to see this! One of my local favorites. Jasper Ridge used to call this the "black-shouldered kite"; we have all now settled on "white-tailed".
