What a joy to explore with kindred souls!

An old friend invites me to visit in his “new” home in Inverness. (“New” since several years – did I mention that he is an “old” friend?) As a special treat, he introduces me to a long-term resident and explorer of Point Reyes. They take me for a photo expedition.

It is wonderful to have knowledgeable guides. Considerate photographers, they allow us time to see, experience, and wait for the right moment. And there is plenty to see.

Thursday, Charles and I walk down the Abbot’s Lagoon Trail to the cove. Little birds and animals appear in the late afternoon: quail, rabbits, sparrows. At the cove, an agile swimmer hunts the salty water. It is hard to identify in the failing light – only after I see my photos am I sure this is a North American River Otter. Once gone from the Bay Area, River Otters have returned, several to Point Reyes and Abbot’s Lagoon. Our cleaning up the air and water has a lot to do with this.

Walking back in the gathering dusk, we see flickering lights ahead. A distant city? Once again, my photos bring certainty: the rising full moon, intermittently obscured by drifting clouds.

After a striking Inverness sunrise and a nice morning, we explore. Mostly driving slowly along back roads, stopping for as long as we want at something interesting, occasionally a short walk. Cars make nice blinds. Red-tailed Hawks and other birds like to sit on fenceposts. Tule Elk have returned to Point Reyes. Burrowing Owl, Coyotes, ocean views. A pleasant afternoon.

One special moment: an American Kestrel, knowing well that we watched, stretched out his feathers and recomposed himself before flying off. Bird yoga.

It is good to be with friends old and new, exploring such a vibrant environment.

The first gallery here shows birds, wildlife, and landscapes from the two days. The heart of the second gallery is a one-minute sequence of seven photos, stretching exercises by an American Kestrel, looking straight at the photographer. The third gallery has photos of photographers; it is meant for family and friends. Ask one of us if you want the password.
