Tassajara Zen Mountain Center (Zenshinji) is a Soto Zen training temple and monastery nestled in the heart of the Santa Lucia Mountains in the Ventana Wilderness, inland from Big Sur, between Carmel Valley and The Pinnacles. Tassajara and its hot springs are open to the public in the summer; it is an isolated monastery the rest of the year. See <http://www.sfzc.org/tassajara/>. The region was home to the native Esselen people for thousands of years. Hot spring resorts were begun in the 1860s. In 1966, the San Francisco Zen Center, led by its first abbot, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, purchased the property. Donations are welcome, and visitors are welcome in the summer. Good food, good people, good surroundings, retreats & workshops, hot springs.
