We were near the top of our hike to the highest spot, when perhaps 8-10 condors flew overhead. The ranger had told me they track 59 condors, who range between the Pinnacles and Big Sur. They can glide that distance in an hour, less time than I can drive it. Their wingspan is 9.5 to 10 feet -- the largest wingspan of North American birds. The main threat to condors is lead. They ingest lead left in carrion, from lead bullets still used by a few recalcitrant hunters. Why not use copper, tungsten, or spent uranium?
