Male and Female Winged Harvester Ants (Messor andrei) Leave the Nest
Winged ants (alates) emerge in July. The males have only one short-lived purpose, and do not need a large head. (One male is above.) All other ants in the colony are female. [p 10]
The male, on the left, has a smaller head.
