The students have not been here before. Stanford’s Doerr School of Sustainability sponsors summer internships for undergraduates, who come from colleges across the US. Many are not familiar with our Mediterranean climate and our wildlands. This tour was a chance for them to get out in the woods and establish a sense of place. (And for at least one student: the time I let her walk alone, silently, was a welcome respite from the busyness of everything, a rare chance to be with herself.)
