Anna’s Hummingbird puts on a show: aerial acrobatics, deep stretch spreading tailfeathers, iridescence winking on and off. With a beak adapted for nectar, he can still catch insects in flight, relying on his quick senses aerial agility.
Insects form a big part of his diet: one can’t live on nectar alone. Protein helps.
It is seriously difficult to focus on him while he darts here and there. My solution: focus on his perch, and take a rapid burst of photos. He often returns to the same favored perch again and again – high at the peak of bare oak twig, or atop redwood, with a commanding view below and all around, both along Deer Path Trail above the vineyard.
