A month without rain, yet the woods are moist. By dawn, dense fog rises from saturated ground, softening light, enhancing colors, and focusing attention on what’s at hand. Morning walks on Sweet Springs Trail, Deer Path Trail, and lower Windy Hill encounter browsing deer and birdlife. California Buckwheat attracts feeding Lesser Goldfinch and Bushtits. Aerial insects lure Anna’s Hummingbird, perched on a lichen-bedecked branch between forays. Ripe-red Toyon berries attract hordes of American Robins. Golden-crowned Sparrow forages seeds. On Sausal Pond, diverse water birds, including a garish Wood Duck, find refuge.

Three curious deer inspect me and my dog one foggy morning beneath lone Blue Oak. For twenty minutes, we stand, walk, pivot, stare, and share the foggy morning.

Fog brings relief when rain fails.
