Season highlight: robins’ return. American Robins and Cedar Waxwings descend on the ridge. Bright red berries -- Toyon and Madrone -- await the feeding frenzy.
Rounds of robins attract others, flocking together: Northern Flickers, Western Bluebird, Scrub Jay – even a Hairy Woodpecker, noticed when reviewing photos. Regal Red-tailed Hawk keeps a separate watch, shunned by the others for good cause.
A majestic buck greets me from grassland at forest margin. We meet again later to continue cross-species communion.
Dark red Toyon berries and colorful birds are not the only touch of color this grey morning. Bright green and golden leaves mark lone Black Oak, greeting the season. As sunlight returns, a red-breasted robin sits proudly atop a Blue Oak, amidst more green and golden leaves.
A dramatic image: Tumbling clouds part to allow a shaft of sunlight, highlighting oak-crowned knoll. Red-tailed Hawk observes from the oak's crest. Paths through dry grass reveal emergent green beneath.
BONUS: red sky after sunset, behind a bare Valley Oak near the Visitors’ Parking Lot. A week earlier: 11/11/2025.
