Familiar Black Phoebe dances from microphone to weather station, singing out, watching for insects over the water – then darting out in a quick sally to snap one and return. Less obvious, Belted Kingfisher catches a fish just above the dam, flying to nearby branch to display and fondle it, soaring across the lake into the forest – to be joined by the Black Phoebe.
Black Phoebes belong to the family of tyrant flycatchers -- with over 400 species, the largest family of birds. Tyrant, because of their perceived ferocity in defending their territory and nests, even against larger invaders. Flycatcher is obvious!
Both Black Phoebes and Belted Kingfishers hunt near water: Black Phoebes, for insects, and Belted Kingfishers, for the fish that eat the insects. Black Phoebes are found in California, the Southwest, and south, even into South America. Belted Kingfishers are found throughout North and Central America.
