White-crowned Sparrows greet the visitor at the parking lot. Soft morning light bathes oaks. Mottled clouds disperse over dry lakebed. Green Heron, flushed from their fishing hole just above the dam, retreats to a distant shoreline to watch approaching Mallards; they share little with the Great Blue Heron save the name, and perhaps diet and longish bill. Searsville Dam: vertigo, don’t look down -- favored hangout of the Black Phoebe featured nearby. Mallards: rafting together in shallow waters, then taking off, teaming up, and circling the lake before departing. Killdeers dabbling quietly in the shallows. European Starlings, singing, displaying their oilslick coloration and spiky throat ruff, congregating. Cryptic moth amongst fallen leaves. Buck relaxing beneath bushes at noontime.

Jasper Ridge just before the real rainy season.
