Thousands turn out in Palo Alto California on October 18, joining the nationwide #NoKings protests. We gather at the intersection of El Camino Real* and Embarcadero, then walk to a park. Walkers stretch the full length of the route, both sides of the street, a steady stream for an hour or two. Some go home, some stay for fellowship, information, music, and maybe even the speeches. As the speeches wind down, a small group of MAGA supporters push down the aisle carrying big flags and a bullhorn. People start singing, and everyone dances until the protesters’ protesters retreat. (I wonder if a small group of anti-Trump protesters would be treated so kindly at a MAGA rally.)

Here are a few views of the signs, the walk, and the gathering in the park. As we were leaving, I passed the MAGA people posing for a group photo on this beautiful autumn day.

(*El Camino Real, the Royal Road, was part of a series of roads under the protection of the King of Spain, connecting the missions and used for commerce. We have not had a king here since Mexico won independence from Spain. Will our republic, crafted with separation of powers to avoid unilateral dictatorship, survive another 250 years?)
