A slow news month in PVR: long grass turns golden; wildflowers hang on, past their peak; occasional rain punctuates the approaching summertime.

Some morning, as you walk Deer Path Trail in the canonical direction (clockwise, with the warm sun at your back in the open stretch, sunshine illuminating your path ahead) – look up and to the left as you ascend past the lone Blue Oak. Can you see the tiny hummingbird perched at the top of the bare oak snag? He often waits there, watching for insects. (If he darts off, don’t despair: he will likely be back soon.)

Cranking up my camera to quick exposures, I follow the action on two mornings in May. Here he is, caught in the act catching an insect. Freeze-frame landings. Cleaning his beak on the branch.

A small piece of action in a slow month.
