April brings springtime in earnest: Iris; Lilies (both Globe and Spotted); Sticky Monkeyflowers; Columbine; Blue-eyed Grass; and Buttercups in profusion! Many other blossoms including Woodland Star of course. Trillium and Hounds Tongue have already blossomed and are setting seeds. Now is a good time to walk our woodland trails – as are all times.

This month’s nature highlights are dominated by special encounters with birds, our itinerant beauties.

A Great Blue Heron watches from the very top of a young Blue Oak above the vineyard, on Deer Path Trail. An unusual perch for this hunter of wetlands and ground-squirrel-rich grasslands. Looking around, deciding: where now?

A Cooper’s (?) Hawk poses in front of our home (across the street from the Frog Pond), leaping from snag to snag on the remnants of our old Dr. Hurd Manzanita. This is a relatively rare hawk here: Red-shouldered and Red-tails are more common. (We haven’t seen a Kite here in a long time.)

Several April mornings and evenings, A Great Egret can be seen hunting in the Frog Pond or the soggy grassland nearby. There must be good pickings here!

Life goes on, even with our human challenges and worries.
