The calendar may say winter; birds act for springtime. Valley Oaks put forth new growth. Western Bluebirds are everywhere, youngsters exploring the new world, elders gathering food. Morning mist alternates with sunny days; the rainy season has hit pause, hopefully to return. A Coyote roams the hill in the Hawthorns Preserve.

Birds! A young Western Bluebird poses on a new shoot from a Valley Oak near the Frog Pond. California Scrub Jays keep busy hoarding acorns from this mast year; one stuffs several into his mouth, almost choking. Spotted Towhee and various sparrows are busy. A tiny, cheeky Bewick’s Wren shows off his tail and overall charm from the very top of a small tree.

More birds! A nearby gallery shows a mixed flock visiting the lone Blue Oak in Portola Valley Ranch. All together.
