Surprise – a monthly birding transect at Jasper Ridge, and most of my photos have birds.
Recovering slowly from my first bout with Covid, I enter Jasper Ridge after the main group. Coming upon three “birders” inspecting a plant, I feel welcome; we are generalists.
A mixed flock with many Lesser Goldfinches twitters around in the tall grass, scarfing seeds. A locally rare Savannah Sparrow poses, fluffing up adorably. A young White-tailed Kite, baby feathers still showing, rests in a treetop, at ease, preening occasionally. (I have missed this favorite bird since early 2023, although surveys earlier this year saw kites.) Also from a treetop with a commanding view, a California Scrub Jay is king of all he surveys.
The birders also explored along the Chaparral Trail (Trail 9). I came home to rest.
Trail names: Susan Walz alerted me to a list of trail names for Jasper Ridge, on the back cover of an old herbarium plant list. I append it here. It seems to me that names are easier to deal with than numbers – I will use both for a while. What do you think? [Note: Trail 1 is now the “Herb Dengler Trail”. This frees up Trail 2 to be simply “Creek Trail”. Any suggestions for the newer trails and roads?
