We manage an early start, but the Harvester Ants, California Quail, and Brush Rabbits are already up and feeding. The ants are oblivious to us. The Quail and Rabbit scatter when we come in sight, but the Quail soon return to breakfast: youngsters, watched over by a few females and one male watch quail.

Fractal Kellog’s Yampah dots the grassland, each plant displaying several flower heads on long stalks, the flower heads composed of flowers on stalks. Look closely: have you ever seen flowers like these? One Yampah has caught a drifting feather which has caught a careless ant. Hayfields Tarweed is the other common grassland flower.

Acorn Woodpeckers have claimed the “Phainopepla Tree” for their granary. A California Towhee tries to share the heights, but is shooed away.

A peaceful walk through familiar territory with an old friend.
