Evidence of cold air aloft: the weather pattern, descending from Alaska, down over the Pacific, then straight toward Tahoe, left a calling card during our storm last night. Hailstones pile up amidst the dry leaves along the Mader Valley Trail.

Cautious bucks: a peaceful herd of eleven bucks, hanging out together while their antlers progress from buds to full display, notice some bikers approaching along the road. Out of an abundance of caution, the bucks depart. They might not understand that the bikers have no interest in chasing them – and even if they did, they couldn’t move as fast across the grassland as they can on the paved road. The bucks are actually quite safe where they are.

As the herd departs, one curious buck stands his ground, gazing, interested in these quiet zero-footed creatures. He finally turns and moves to catch up with his buddies.
