In this almost-time, anticipating the deep rainy season any day now -- with alternating clouds, sun, mist, and perhaps a teasing shower – it is good to be ready for anything. On a recent morning walk, slanting sunlight peeks beneath the cloud cover to make a hillside glow – offering a new perspective on the lone Blue Oak in Portola Valley Ranch. Crows and a Scrub Jay go about their morning business. Distant high misty rain elicits an evanescent high rainbow; clouds drift by as I am lured into the Frog Pond, discovering a tiny patch of open water, home to spiky dried plants.

Bonus photos are from a walk to Eagle Trail, with the landscape holding its breath, waiting for soaking rain and rushing creek. And the autumn colors of the Black Oak at the crest of Black Oak Trail.
