Appearing suddenly, fading fast: a rainbow over the Frog Pond at dawn. Sunlight streams through a narrow break in the eastern cloud cover, anointing trees beyond the Pond. A short burst of soft rain. 7 am, Daylight Standard Time.

So much light is returned to us by these raindrops, back from the direction opposite the sun. At the rainbow, of course, is the maximum returning refraction, segregated by color. A dimmer outer rainbow is evidence for another path for refraction in small spheres of water. Outside the rainbow, darker skies
