Our rocky planet has a thin atmospheric sheen: nitrogen, oxygen, and trace gasses. (Yes, we have added too much carbon dioxide and methane recently; we can fix this if we want to.) Our atmosphere helps keep Earth at the Goldilocks temperature for liquid water, and we have plenty. Water vapor suffuses our atmosphere. Often invisible, it sometimes manifests as clouds or fog, descends as rain or snow, and – working with our Sun and our individual point of view -- conjures rainbows. Our atmosphere supports birds in flight, and life. And everywhere on this swaddled planet, life spreads.

For three days in October, in Portola Valley, California, the moist atmosphere displays multiple aspects: spectacular clouds; rainbow (!); and misty fog. Vultures ride thermals; a crow comments.

Morning light suffuses all.

What a wonderful world we live in! Let’s work together and not mess it up.
